Synopsis

This research study is an attempt to cover various aspects of the conflict in Balochistan and introduce the province to the world outside as well as to other people in Pakistan. An effort has been made to document and compile information on the key issues, events, personalities and society of Balochistan. An effort has been made to explore the causes of alienation of the province from the rest of the country. Getting to know more about the country’s largest province, its people, politics, land and history is a prerequisite for addressing the grievances of the Baloch people and introducing policies and programmes for political and economic development.

This study of Balochistan, though focused on profiling a province mired in political conflicts and violence, also identifies and analyses religious militant movements. In addition, the inter-tribe and intra-tribe feuds, which have caused sporadic violence and human suffering, are also a part of this study. Last but not the least, criminal gangs of smugglers and traffickers who operate out of this province have also contributed to the deterioration of law and order.

The key sections of this study are as under:

  1. Baloch Land, People and History
  2. Tribes, Culture and Insurgencies
  3. Constitutional and Administrative System
  4. A Political Profile: Parties and Leaders
  5. Geo-Strategic and Economic Significance
  6. 2007: Year of Terrorism and Insurgency
  7. Conflict Resolution and Management
