Since 2005 a gradual and consistent increase was witnessed in the number of suicide attacks and subsequent fatalities in Pakistan. In this regard Lal Mosque Operation conducted in July 2007 proved to be a watershed as suicide terrorism rose in Pakistan exponentially. This upward trend continued till 2009, which was the deadliest year in terms of number of attacks and casualties. As many as 1,305 people were killed and 3,723 were injured in 87 reported attacks in 2009. However, in 2010 both the number of attacks and fatalities declined compared to previous year. At least 68 incidents of suicide bombings were recorded in 2010 which claimed lives of 1,187 people and 2,926 injured. In the year 2011 this downward has continued as 45 suicide attacks have resulted in 676 killings and 1,462 injuries. 2012 started with new hopes that this downward trend will remain persistent this year again, however so far 13 suicide attacks have resulted in 86 killings and 115 others injured.
