Civilian casualties in, ongoing, armed conflicts in Pakistan have sharply risen since 2007, especially after the Lal Mosque operation. One possible reason for such sharp increase was a bloody wave of suicide attacks unleashed by Pakistani Taliban to avenge the Lal Mosque killings. Since 2007 as many as 50,738 civilians have been killed and injured in terrorist attacks and others incidents of violence like sectarian strife, ethnically motivated targeted killings, nationalist separatist insurgency in Balochistan as well as in criminal violence across the country. The most number of civilian casualties were recorded in 2009 when more than 9,000 civilians were killed or wounded in a deadly wave of terrorist attacks that swept through the country in the wake of military operations Rah-e-Rast (Path of deliverance) in Malakand Division and Rah-e-Nijat (Path to Salvation) in South Waziristan Agency against Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a conglomerate of anti-state militant groups based in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).
